Let's Make a Deal
Life is like the game show, Let’s Make a Deal. What’s behind door #1, #2, etc.
In our younger years, we have lots of doors to choose from. Door #1 is that dream job. Door #2 is marriage and children. Door #3 is that European vacation. Door #4 is that new Corvette, and on and on. So many doors. So little time.
As we get older, our culture starts closing those doors, and we can be left with only one door in front of us. That’s when life gets simpler but more complicated at the same time. That door is labeled, “Who am I”?
That question comes up for some of us as all the doors have closed behind us and we’re looking at living the rest of our life in this liminal state thinking of all that could have been, or walking through the door and taking the Hero’s Journey of self-discovery.
Richard Rohr, in his book Falling Upward, said “When you get your “Who am I?” question right, all the “What should I do?” questions tend to take care of themselves.”
I’m spending less time thinking about those doors that the culture has closed now. There’s another life on the other side of that “Who am I?” door.
