SALSA is a spicy sauce and a saucy dance. In San Antonio, we have a third SALSA, Successfully Aging and Living in San Antonio, a non-profit organization dedicated to creating a community where older adults are respected, thrive, and enjoy connected lives.
I’m proud to announce that I’ve joined SALSA as an Americorps VISTA (Volunteer in Service to America).
In a previous post, I mentioned Archimedes' famous quote, “Give me a lever long enough and a place to stand, and I can move the world.” Like most people my age, I have a lever of knowledge, skills, experience, and wisdom. SALSA has given me a place to stand. I may not move the world, but I can make a difference.
I asked my dear friend Bill Zaner why older people sometimes seemed unhappy. He said, “Because the world’s having a party, and they haven’t been invited.” That was a pretty good summation of the state of our older population. They remain on the sidelines with no place to stand where they can leverage their skills, experience, and wisdom.
As our tagline says, “Aging is so cool, everyone’s doing it.” I’m excited to be with an organization that wants to make that more than a tagline.
What a fantastic tagline! Go older adults!
