A friend recently recommended me to a journalist for an interview on aging. He told the interviewer, “He is very focused on keeping his mind lubricated at age 80.”
I like the use of the word “lubricated” to describe life-long learning, or as we call it, long-life learning.
I keep my cars and motorcycles running for years because I change the oil. I keep myself running at 80 because I change my mind.
That doesn’t mean that I don’t have any beliefs. It means that I try honestly to see things from different viewpoints.
That’s what long-life learning means to me. It’s not about books or passing tests. It’s about being curious.
We come into this world full of questions. Too many of us are going out full of answers - many of those answers are wrong.
How do you keep your mind lubricated?
